West Virginia Drops Second Big 12 Game

still water, OK – The West Virginia Mountaineers (10-4, 0-2) dropped the second game of their two-game road trip to defeat Monday night’s Big 12 Conference game against Oklahoma State (9-5, 1-1) 67-60 to start.
West Virginia started 1-5 from the field and made three turnovers as Oklahoma State took an early 6-2 lead and went into the first media timeout. The Mountaineers matched the shooting numbers over the next four minutes, trailing 11-4 at the 11:58 mark of the first half.
The Mountaineers came within three, but guard John-Michael Wright buried a three on subsequent possession to put the Cowboys back to six at 22-16, staying 5:41 in the half.
West Virginia committed 11 turnovers in the first half, shooting just 34.4% from the field and trailing by nine at the break.
Oklahoma State started the second half with a 6-2 sprint and secured the largest lead of the game by 13 points.
The West Virginia forward led the lead for a Mountaineers comeback, scoring seven points in the first seven minutes of the second half to put the Mountaineers to three at 11:43. However, guard Caleb Asberry hit a three on the ensuing possession and extended the Cowboys’ lead back to six.

Trailing seven when Pat Semenick got in, West hit a small hookshot mid-color and had an opportunity to cut to three on the Mountaineers’ ensuing possession. He would miss both tries, but WVU forward Tre Mitchell got to Oklahoma State, snagged the offensive rebound, kicked it to Erik Stevenson and he buried a three to put the Mountaineers within two, making a run of three straight threes for Stevenson started putting West Virginia two to play with 7:20 left.
However, after Stevenson’s third three, he was called to a technical. The officer’s explanation is that Stevenson made a gesture toward the crowd as he ran back to the ground. Replay showed little to verify the call, but it was the call nonetheless. Asbury went 1-2 on free throw attempts and the WVU lead was up by one.
Stevenson fouled 6-12 to play in the game on a drive to the basket.
Oklahoma State regained the lead with two free throws. 58-57, with 3:55 remaining in the game.
West Virginia shot just 1-7 from the field and 1-4 from the free throw line after Stevenson’s departure as the Mountaineers fell 67-60 at Stillwater.
