Wrestling Earns Eight Podium Finishes at Cougar Open

DANVILLE, Va. — Members of the Washington and Lee University wrestling team competed at the Cougar Open on Sunday, scoring the fourth-best 379 team points at the Open.

The Generals claimed eight podiums that day with a win in the 184 weight class. Jack McCusker (MAnhasset, NY / Manhasset) amassed a team-high 28.0 points on his way to first place.

McCusker recorded wins in the first, second and quarterfinals games through the fall before winning 5-1 by decision over the untied Mison Mickle in the semifinals. In the championship game, McCusker defeated Averett’s Jacob Jimenez by 3:41 by Fall.

Johann Santovsky (Pittsford, NY / Pittsford Mendon) appeared in Championship Game 197, losing 11-10 to Roanoke’s Cam Cavins but scoring 21.5 team points for the blue-and-whites. Santowski won by fall in the first round and semifinal match, then defeated McDaniel’s quarterfinal opponent Eric Ward with a technical fall 18-2.

David Rubin (Matawan, NJ / Matawan Regional) won the 133rd consolation game after a loss to Ferrum’s Rubyn Semedo, sending Rubin into the third-place playoff. Rubin dominated his final round of the day with a 13-3 major decision win over Coker’s Brandon Dasen.

Roanoke College, who will travel to Lexington on Thursday night for the first ODAC duals of the 2022-23 season, scored the most team points on Sunday with 842.

Averett and Shenandoah University rounded out the top 3 finishers with 714 and 431 points, respectively.
