Kitley has double-double in Virginia Tech’s 67-41 win over Bucknell

BLACKSBURG, Va.–Elizabeth Kitley scored a double-double with 22 points and 13 rebounds to help the Virginia Tech women’s basketball team defeat the Bucknell Bison 67-41 at home on Friday.

Adding to Kitley’s strong performance, the Hokies (2-0) were led by Cayla Kingwho had eight points and two steals, and through Georgia Amoorewho added 11 points and four assists.

Virginia Tech amassed 37 rebounds in Friday’s game compared to Bucknell’s 28, led by Kitley’s 13 boards. The Hokies also worked on offensive glass, turning 16 rebounds into 17 second-chance points.

Virginia Tech forced 20 bucknell turnovers while committing just seven in Friday’s game itself. The Hokies converted those takeaways into 23 points on the offensive end of the floor. King’s two steals paved the way for Virginia Tech.

How it happened

Virginia Tech started with a 6-0 run that culminated in a bucket from Kitley to take an early 8-21 lead in the first quarter. The Hokies then lost some of that lead but still went into the quarter-break with a 13-11 advantage. Virginia Tech relied on his three-point shooting during this period, putting down two shots to account for six of his 13 points.

Virginia Tech kept their lead intact in the first quarter before embarking on a 6-0 run in the second half that started at the 3:11 mark, highlighted by a bucket of Kayana Traylorto extend his lead to 28-21. The Hokies added a point to that lead and enjoyed a 31-23 lead at halftime. At Virginia Tech, non-starters scored five of their 18 total points off the bench during the quarter.

Virginia Tech continued to maintain their lead at halftime before going further to 40-26 with a 4-51 in the third with a 9-0 run that was cut short by a basket from Kitley. By the end of the third period, the Bison had extended that lead somewhat, but the Hokies still went into the fourth quarter with a 46-33 lead. Virginia Tech converted five offensive rebounds into six second-chance points en route to a 15-point total in the quarter.

Virginia Tech kept their lead intact before embarking on an 11-0 run to extend the lead to 57-35, with 5:09 remaining in the contest. The Hokies continued to extend the lead and bowled the rest of the way to a 67-41 victory. Virginia Tech benefited from seven Bucknell turnovers during the quarter and scored 10 points fewer than those takeaways.
