Carmen Luisi, Holliston girls take care of business in Division 2 cross-country state qualifier

“Today felt good,” said Holliston coach Jaime Murphy. “Obviously we were in a difficult position because I think we had the worst conditions after the races because it was raining when we started. But the team played as expected [and] as they hoped.”

Holliston entered the first race of the day when the morning rain was at its most consistent. Luisi prevailed in 18:34.99, Maggie Kuchman (18:57.37) was third and Annabelle Lynch (19:15.75) was sixth. Murphy thought the Panthers were doing admirably given the weather.

“Conditions weren’t ideal, but it’s cross-country and it’s November, so we knew we had to control what we could control and everyone had the same conditions,” she said. “So we went out and executed.”

The Panthers won the Bay State Invitational in a preview of the Fort Devens course, which will be the leg of the state championship. But next Saturday’s race will have fewer hills after officials made adjustments to the course. Holliston didn’t have his fastest team race in state qualifiers and the Panthers believe they have untapped potential.

“They’re coming to the states at the perfect time,” Murphy said. “We know that today wasn’t our fastest time. We know there’s more in the tank, so that’s exciting.”

Holliston is the favorite but Whitinsville Christian should be a close contender. The Crusaders totaled 35 points in a dominant win in Division 2C, fueled by a singles win by standout eighth grader Abby Flagg (18:47.04). Amherst-Pelham won the 2A race, fueled by a singles win by senior Tamar Byl-Brann.

For boys, Burlington (71 points) proved they’re the team to beat in Division 2. The dynamic senior duo of Rithikh Prakash (15:45.26) and Eric Sekyaya (15:59.85) finished third and fourth to lead the Red Devils in 2A. Nashoba’s Adam Balewicz won in 15:25.98.

Falmouth senior Henry Gartner set the fastest time of the day in 15:19.25 and was the best of the 2B race by almost a minute. Holliston (136 points) placed second behind Groton-Dunstable (94 points) and qualified for the all-state meeting for the first time since 1993.

With 63 points, Norwell secured a narrow 2C win over Triton (74 points) and Dover-Sherborn (103 points). Clippers junior Thomas Corbett strode through the field with a winning time of 16:10.97.

Uxbridge’s Aidan Ross and Northbridge’s Marcus Reilly should line up for an all-state singles showdown. Ross (16:00.96) set the fastest time of the day at Gardner Municipal Golf Course to win the boys’ 3B qualifier, and Reilly (16:11.87) placed first in 3A. Lenox Senior Dennis Love (16:48.85) prevailed in the Division 3C race (16:48.85).

Norfolk Aggie junior Madelyn Germain continued her outstanding season with a 19:53.35 victory in the girls’ 3A race. Ella Dunbury of East Bridgewater, who placed second to Germain in the state trades, claimed a 3B victory in 20:23.39. Evelyn Wool of Bromfield (19:59.61) captured the 3C crown.

Both Weston teams had banner days. The Wildcat boys used Carsen Valenta’s third place finish (17:20.56) to kick off a team win in the 3A race with 74 points. Alessandra Gavris (20:25.04) used her second place finish in the girls’ 3A event to lead a dominant win for Weston (38 points).
