HKS unveils plans for brise soleil-wrapped supertall skyscraper in Austin

Architecture studio HKS has released plans to build a supertall skyscraper in Austin, Texas that will be the state’s tallest building.

HKS Austin has released plans for an 80-story, 315-meter skyscraper called the Wilson Tower that will be draped in brise soleil.

The tower, which occupies half a block on 5th Street in downtown Austin, will feature a raised base with concrete pillars projecting above the level sidewalks.

The tower itself rises from the podium level and will be relatively flat, with extensive glazing along the broad sides of the structure and a metal brise soleil wrapping around the narrow sides and capping the rounded top.

“Our vision for Wilson Tower is to set a new bar for skyscraper residences in Austin that we believe will foster creativity and social connections,” said Brad Wilkins, director of HKS Austin.

“In addition to inviting outdoor patios and gardens, the tower itself is cloaked in a brise soleil that offers protection from the hot Texas sun and wind while providing structural strength.”

“This brise soleil gives the building uniquely shaded and comfortable outdoor living spaces on every level,” he continued.

According to the studio, the Soleil bride is a specific response to the hot Texas summers. The shading will take on two different forms on the facade of the building.

Classic vertical slats are used on the podium to shade the interior spaces, while the tower itself is covered with a blocky metal structure that changes its profile according to the needs of the apartments.

The residential tower is being developed by Austin-based Wilson Capital and will have 450 apartments.

“We believe it is important to add intentionally designed density along the city’s transit corridors to accommodate the unprecedented population growth Austin is experiencing,” said Taylor Wilson, founder of Wilson Capital.

In addition to the variety of housing options ranging from studios to four bedroom homes, the development will feature podium amenities. These will include a ground floor restaurant, cinema, coworking spaces and fitness center, and the top of the podium will be a pool deck.

Britt Design Group is responsible for the interior design while Nudge Design is doing the landscaping on the property.

When finished, it will be the tallest skyscraper in Texas

A string of supertall skyscrapers were recently announced in Austin, many vying for the title of Texas’ tallest building. In September, Kohn Pedersen Fox broke ground on Waterline, a 1,022-foot (312-meter) skyscraper on the river that flows through Austin.

Founded in Dallas in 1939, HKS has since opened a number of offices across the United States and internationally. Among the studio’s recent projects in the United States is a development of a creative complex in Hollywood.
