Missouri Men’s Basketball Game Thread: Penn journeys to Columbia

Missouri 54 | penn 48

Second Half | 15:23

Notes on the first half

  • The student section looks a little less crowded than it did in Monday’s win against Southern Indiana, and the stands look about half full at game time.
  • Starters for Mizzou: DeAndre Gholston, D’Moi Hodge, Nick Honor, Noah Carter, Kobe Brown.
  • Starters for the University of Pennsylvania: Clark Slajchert, Jonah Charles, Jordan Dingle, Max Martz, and Max Lorca-Lloyd
  • Kobe Brown knocks down a 3-pointer to open the scoring and Noah Carter adds another on second possession. D’Moi Hodge and Brown add two more to the following two holdings. That’s 4-4 from beyond the arc for Mizzou and two turnovers for Penn.
  • Carter connects to two more three-pointers. The Tigers are 6-8 from beyond the arc already with power on their first five tries. After forcing 22 turnovers against Southern Indiana, Mizzou has already forced three.
  • The Tigers flash a full-court press and zone defense early on, but Penn shoots 3-6 from beyond the arc.
  • Penn put on a 14-0 run, but Aidan Shaw sent the Mizzou crowd into an uproar with a thunderous dunk.
  • The Quakers have continued their run as they have scored 25 of the last 30 points. 3-PT defense continues to be a weakness for the Tigers, who have watched Penn shoot 50% from beyond the arc so far.
  • Legendary Mizzou trainer Norm Stewart is in the building.
  • Isiaih Mosley hasn’t come on as a substitute yet. There was no news ahead of the game so this will remain a topic of discussion tonight.
  • After scoring six of his first seven threes, Mizzou has only shot 1-8 from beyond the arc. Penn, meanwhile, is 8-16 on his attempts. The Quakers also controlled the rebound fight at 22-10(!).
  • The Tigers forced 12 turnovers and just regained the lead through a 3-point jumper from Hodge.
  • Both Penn and Mizzou are shooting similar to how things are at halftime. The Tigers are 8-17 from across the arc and 14-33 off the field, which is similar to the Quaker marks of 8-18 and 15-32, respectively. The main differences are turnovers (12-6 in favor of Mizzou) and rebounds (23-15 in favor of Penn).

Notes on the second half

  • Noah Carter starts the second half with a hit, and Kobe Brown adds with a layup of his own.
  • Tre Gomillion scored the Tigers’ ninth treble of the game to extend Mizzou’s lead to six points early in the second half. Hodge and Carter combined for 29 points, delivering much of the offense.
