Mitchell scores 71 points, Cavs beat Bulls 145-134 in OT

CLEVELAND (AP) — Donovan Mitchell notched an NBA season-high and franchise-record 71 points — which is the eighth-highest in a game in history — as the Cleveland Cavaliers rallied from 21 down to edge the Chicago Bulls in overtime with 145 -134 to hit Monday night.

It was the highest-scoring game since Lakers legend Kobe Bryant scored 81 points against Toronto on Jan. 22, 2006. Wilt Chamberlain owns the NBA record 100 for Philadelphia vs. New York on March 2, 1962 in Hershey, Pennsylvania.

Mitchell scored 13 points in the extra session after forcing OT by snatching his own deliberately missed free throw and grabbing a circus shot with 3.0 seconds left, tying the game at 130-all and the Cavaliers-record 58 points broke.

“I’ve never witnessed a performance like this live,” said Cavs coach JB Bickerstaff. “We were treated to one of the greatest performances in NBA history tonight.”

In OT, Mitchell is the 12th player to score 70 points. The former Utah Jazz standout also had career-high 11 assists and eight rebounds in 50 minutes and also had career bests with 20 free throws executed and 25 free throw attempts.

Mitchell went off the field 22 of 34 and made 7 of 15 3-pointers while carrying the Cavaliers, who went for the second straight game without All-Star guard Darius Garland (right thumb sprain) and forward Evan Mobley (pain in the chest). right ankle) were.

“Every single game he made was a game that needed doing,” Bickerstaff said.

DeMar DeRozan had 44 points, Zach LeVine had 26 points and Nikola Vucevic added 20 points and 13 rebounds for Chicago, which didn’t fall behind in regulation.

Mitchell put Cleveland ahead for the first time – the game’s only lead change – by burying a 3-pointer to open OT. LeBron James and Kyrie Irving shared the previous Cavaliers record of 57 points.

The enemies of the Central Division clashed for the second time in three days. Cleveland was the 103-102 winner at the United Center on December 31st.
