Agreement expands company’s presence in Luzerne County
MECHANICSBURG, PA (October 27, 2022) – Pennsylvania American Water, a subsidiary of American Water (NYSE: AWK), announced today that it has acquired the Foster Township West End sewage collection system’s wastewater facilities for $3.75 million. The system serves approximately 525 customers in the villages of Highland, Youngstown, Upper Lehigh and the Woodside and Grove areas within the community.
Over the next five years, Pennsylvania American Water plans to invest more than $1.4 million in upgrades to improve the system, including targeted inflow and infiltration control improvements, new technology and control systems, and safety improvements at the four pumping stations of the system. Upgrades also include the replacement of sewer mains and manholes.
“For many years, our company and employees have provided reliable water and wastewater services to Northeast Pennsylvania,” said Mike Doran, President of Pennsylvania American Water. “We are committed to investing in the infrastructure needed to provide reliable wastewater service to our new customers in the community.”
The community agreed to sell its sewage system to Pennsylvania American Water in May 2021. In a letter to customers, community officials said the use of proceeds from the sale would be discussed at future community public meetings.
As part of the agreement, Pennsylvania American Water will absorb Foster Township’s wastewater tariffs. The company’s rates are regulated by the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC), and any future rate changes would need to be reviewed and approved by the PUC. Pennsylvania American Water offers a variety of customer service programs, including grants and discounted services, to its low-income wastewater customers who qualify through the H2O Help to Others program.
