Where did the Oklahoma Sooners land?

Since the inception of the College Football Playoffs in 2014, 36 teams from 14 programs have made it onto the big dance. ESPN’s Bill Connelly took it upon himself to rank each and every CFP team.

The top ten is as you’d expect: lots of Alabama, Georgia, and Clemson, with LSU’s 2019 roster coming in at #2. Sooners fans will have to scroll a little to find their beloved crimson and cream.

Here’s how Connelly ranked the teams, in his own words:

Here’s our ranking of all 36 teams that were part of the mix. (This is the third year I’ve made this list, adding the four new playoff teams to each of the past two seasons.) I created this list, as I usually do, by a combination of numbers (mainly mine SP+ ratings) and my personal derived opinions. Start with the stats, then adjust for actual CFP performance and other relevant criteria. To the list! -Bill Connelly, ESPN

With the Sooners still searching for that elusive first playoff win, maybe one day we’ll see an OU team rank a little higher. Let’s see where the other four Oklahoma Playoff teams have ended up to this day.

While I’m not sure I’d prefer 2020 Notre Dame or this year’s TCU to this OU team, getting hammered by LSU in the Peach Bowl leaves a very unpleasant taste in the mouth.

While Jalen Hurts was a very good QB during his year at Norman, he wasn’t Baker Mayfield or Kyler Murray. This OU offense was the lowest of the four.

The Sooners would be ruled out in the second half in an Orange Bowl loss to Clemson. I wonder who Clemson’s defense coordinator was. He must have been very good at his job.

This was Lincoln Riley’s first year as offensive coordinator and Baker Mayfield’s first year at OU after transferring from Texas Tech.

I contend that if Hollywood Brown had played this game, the Sooners would have won.

Going into a game against Alabama with a very poor defense cost the Sooners another playoff game as the Crimson Tide ran over the Sooners in the first half.

I’m starting to notice a theme in these playoff losses.

Aside from the questionable squib kick, this is the closest loss the Sooners have ever had in the college football playoffs.

The closest the Sooners came to a national championship was in the playoff era, and it ended in overtime against the Georgia Bulldogs. Like every other result on this list, it was pretty disappointing.

What’s next?

While it’s possible that the Sooners will return to the College Football Playoffs in 2023, it’s unlikely. But in the 2024 extended playoffs? That’s a very real possibility.

The playoff-winning monkey is still on the back of this program, but there’s a lot of hope.
