Wheeling, W. Va. – The 2022 softball season was a learning year for the Wheeling University softball team as it featured a roster made up mostly of freshmen and sophomores. Heading into 2023, the girls have gained some experience and are looking to take a step forward at the competitive Mountain East Conference (MEC). On Thursday, the team unveiled its 2023 regular season schedule, which includes 11 home doubleheaders between March and April.
Last season, the Cardinals had to be street fighters due to the significant amount of rain the Ohio Valley experienced in the spring. The team played just five doubleheaders at home all of last season and finished the year 14-33 overall and 6-25 in MEC play, missing the MEC tournament. In the end, however, it was a four-win improvement for the team, but there were three fewer wins in conference play. After a strong start to the season, the Cardinals were only going 5-15 in away games during the season when they fell out of the playoffs. They ended up tying their final four games of the regular season, defeating Notre Dame College before being swept by Alderson Broaddus to end the season.
Also in 2023, the schedule starts with a heavy dose of non-conference action, including two major tournaments. The team opens the season on the road on February 16 when they take on Salem in doubleheader action. They then compete in their two major tournaments of the season, competing in the Chicago Dome Series on February 23-26 and the annual Spring Games on March 6-10. They wrap up their early-season non-conference schedule with their 2023 home opener on March 15 when they host Ohio Dominican in a doubleheader action at JB Chambers I-470 Softball Field.
They then dive headfirst into MEC action with their opening doubleheader on the road against Alderson Broaddus on March 18 and their second doubleheader at Notre Dame College the following day. The MEC game is coming to Wheeling for the first time on March 25-26 when the team hosts Charleston and West Virginia State. They begin their home conference schedule with their Cash & Prize Bash game against Charleston on March 25th. Wheeling will end the month of March with their first “Battle of Wheeling” doubleheader when they take on rival West Liberty on Wednesday, March 29th.
After traveling a lot in March, Wheeling opens April with two doubleheaders against Fairmont State and Frostburg State on April 1 and 2, beginning a month in which they will contest seven doubleheaders. They then faced Concord, Glenville State and West Liberty three straight games before returning home on April 15 and 16 to face West Virginia Wesleyan and Davis & Elkins. They end their road schedule with a non-conference doubleheader against Findlay and doubleheaders against Frostburg State and Ohio Dominican. The regular season concludes with two home games against Notre Dame College (April 28) and Alderson Broaddus (April 29), which will also be Senior Day.
The Wheeling University softball team will start the 2023 regular season on Thursday, February 16, when they head out to a doubleheader against Salem.
