Barbara Lambrecht – Duluth News Tribune

Barbara Elaine Lambrecht of Duluth, MN, died on October 20, 2022. Barbara celebrated her 80th birthday with her family at their Lake Superior home last year.

Born in 1941 to George and Kate (Behm) Lackman, Barbara was raised on the family farm outside of Billings, MT. She and brothers Jim and Jack attended elementary school at the one-room Pioneer Schoolhouse while helping their parents grow potatoes and sugar beets. Barbara graduated from Billings Senior High School in 1959 where she was made an FFA Queen and Dairy Princess and attended 4H and the DECA program. After high school, she moved to California, worked for several large companies, and cruised the Pacific Coast in her beloved Chevy II convertible. She married Richard “Dick” Lambrecht of Billings in 1964 and they settled in Santa Barbara, where Vanessa and Mark were born. They returned to Billings in 1969. She earned a bachelor’s degree in education from Eastern Montana College and became a preschool/kindergarten teacher and later a high school teacher at Billings Career Center.

In 1976 the family moved to Missoula after purchasing the Gay Nineties Lounge and Liquor Store. Barbara and Dick divorced in 1977 and she managed the business, a number of rental properties and remained active in the Montana Tavern Association for 30 years.

In retirement, Barbara took care of her parents in Missoula, visited Vanessa’s family in Duluth, MN and Mark’s family in Helena, MT, and traveled the world. She particularly enjoyed cheering on her grandchildren as they competed in football, hockey, soccer, speed skating, skiing, bass fishing, and wrestling. She moved to Duluth in 2015 and loved having everyone over for dinner and vacations, cherished the time she spent participating in her grandchildren’s activities, making new friends, and exploring Minnesota’s North Country.

She has visited 20 countries with family and friends including Egypt – her favourite; China; Japan; Peru – Climbing to Machu Picchu; Italy; Germany; Austria; Poland and Russia. Other adventures have included skydiving at 55, skiing in her 60s, and rafting down Montana’s beautiful rivers.

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents George and Kate Lackman, brothers Jim and Jack Lackman, and former husband Dick Lambrecht. She is survived by her daughter Vanessa Paulson (John) and children Haley, Emily, Matthew and Jessie of Duluth, MN; son Mark Lambrecht (Amy) and her sons Grant and Lee from Helena, MT; sister-in-law Dorothy Lackman and family; the family of the late brother Jim; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Barbara asked for a celebration of her life instead of a funeral. Family and friends will be notified when the celebration is scheduled. The family is asking those who would like to express their sympathy to make a donation to their chosen charities — Second Harvest Northern Lakes Food Bank and One Roof Community Housing of Duluth — or their own preferred charity on Barbara’s behalf.
