BALTIMORE– There are bullet holes in homes and vehicles along the 700 block of North Glover Street in East Baltimore, including one in the front window of Donnell Garland’s home.
He narrowly missed his wife.
Police found 17-year-old D’Asia Garrison just meters from his door. She had been shot just before 3:30 a.m.
She later died in hospital.
Garrison is the city’s first murder victim of 2023.
“Even if it is the illusion of security. She’s really shaken up,” Garland said. “My eldest daughter was the one who was really affected because she’s in the same age group. It really messed up their security.”
A woman who said she was the victim’s godmother posted on Facebook: “D’Asia…the family’s beloved little ‘MaMa.’ Babygirl rest in peace.” She also wrote, “My heart is heavy on the first day of 2023. My 17 year old goddaughter D’Asia Garrison was taken away from my family this morning. Another holiday to mourn for RIP MaMa.”
WJZ was on site as homicide detectives again scoured the area for evidence that could lead them to Garrison’s killer Monday morning.
No arrests were made at this time.
Citywide in West Baltimore, authorities are still investigating the murder of another young person – a 7-year-old boy.
He was shot in the head on Friday night. An 18-year-old was taken into custody in connection with the shooting and is undergoing a psychiatric evaluation.
Police have released few details about the crime, and officials at the department told WJZ Monday they had no news to share.
“He’s an 18-year-old with a gun and his siblings in the house and then unfortunately tragedy happened,” said Robert, a neighbor.
Robert also told WJZ investigator Mike Hellgren that he has been in contact with the victim’s parents and that his wife’s church is working to help them.
“We have these young people with these guns, and it’s tearing Baltimore apart,” he said.
“I’ve been in Baltimore my whole life and it’s just awful,” he said. “Every year it gets worse.”
In the past year alone, at least 16 children have been murdered in Baltimore City. Many of these crimes have remained unsolved.
On Monday, police also reported that a 17-year-old was shot in the hand in West Baltimore. They said he was in a reported stolen vehicle when he was hit.
But homicides and nonfatal shootings declined slightly. Annual data shows 333 people were killed in Baltimore City in 2022, down one from 2021.
Shootings and homicides have declined significantly in West Baltimore as the city prepares to expand its Group Violence Reduction Strategy, a more holistic and intensive plan focused on the root causes of violence.
