What to watch for with Notre Dame’s commits on the field this week

Notre Dame’s commitments in the 2023 and 2024 classes are in the middle of their respective senior and junior seasons, and this article takes a look at what to look out for as the weekend approaches.

Indiana Class 2A playoff run begins for Merrillville (Ind.) Andrean (6-3). Irish linebacker signed Drayk Bowen‘s side lost three regular-season games last season but made a playoff run and won the state title. And Bowen was obviously a big part of that, winning the Gatorade Player of the Year Award in Indiana. It should also be noted that Andrean always plays a tough regular season schedule, competing against teams that are in a higher classification.

Andrean had a first-round bye last week and fights Lakeville (Ind.) LaVille (10-0) on Friday.

Bowen has been outstanding this season, totaling 94 stops, 11 tackles for loss, 3 sacks, 2 abandoned passes, 3 forced fumbles, 1 fumble recovery, and 1 blocked punt. On offense, he recorded 116 carries for 738 yards and 13 touchdowns, as well as 9 receptions for 216 yards and 3 scores.

I’m a sucker for production, and I’ve seen Notre Dame’s commits bring in big numbers, especially in multiple positions. And for last week, the Cincinnati Lakota West (10-0) was safe Ben Minich.

In a 31-14 win that gave Lakota West a perfect regular season, Minich defensively had 2 tackles, 1 sack and 1 interception, added 34 rushing yards and caught 5 passes for 93 yards and 1 touchdown.

Here are Minich’s season stats: 28 stops, 2.5 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, and 3 interceptions (1 return 36 yards for a touchdown)…14 receptions for 283 yards and 3 touchdowns…4 rushes for 47 yards.

I will be heading to the Athens, Georgia area to see the recent offering of the Notre Dame class of 2023 Khalil Barnes from Bogart (Ga.) North Oconee. His team has been dominant this season and, as far as I know, is playing inferior competition. I’m not expecting a great game here, but I’m looking forward to seeing Barnes in action for the first time and meeting him after the competition.

Barnes is listed as a cornerback, but Notre Dame is recruiting him as a wide receiver and is expected to have him on an official visit next weekend.
