Mountaineers Sweep Louisiana, 3-0 – App State Athletics

BOONE, N.C.— The App State volleyball team defeated Louisiana 3-0 (25-23, 25-20, 26-24) on Friday, improving to 17-9 (10-5 SBC). The Mountaineers have won 10 of their last 11 games, which is the best streak for App State since a program record 16 straight wins during the 2015 campaign.

“I couldn’t be prouder of our team that beat Louisiana tonight,” said the head coach Sarah Rumely Noble. “Our offense was balanced and we fought hard on defense.”

The Black and Gold returns to court for the second round against the Ragin’ Cajuns at 1 p.m. Saturday. There are free t-shirts for the fans and the Mountaineers honor the seniors Sam Bickley, Sarah Missronand student assistant coach Morgan Flores After the game.

Senior McCall Denny and second graders Lulu Ambrose Split the team lead into kills and release 12 of each. Denny also led the team with nine. Missroon had a team-high with four blocks while Bickley had a team-high with 20 assists. Bickley, Jr Sophie Cainand newbie Alyssa McBean each served an ace.

App State passed Louisiana in points (60-51), kills (48-36), blocks (9-7), assists (43-33), and digs (45-44).

After going point for point early in the first set, App State broke a 6-6 tie with a kill from Ambrose followed by a block from the duo of Ambrose and freshman Maya Winterhoff and McBean’s kill to give Black and Gold a 9-6 lead. Another three-point run that included kills from Winterhoff and Junior Megan Dombrowskithe Mountaineers took the lead 12:7. Louisiana managed a comeback with 20:20, which corresponded to the Mountaineers. Back-to-back kills from Missroon and Denny gave App State a one-goal lead (22-21), but the Ragin’ Cajuns all finished at 23. Ambrose knocked down a kill to take the set for the Mountaineers 25-23.

The Mountaineers’ momentum continued into the second set as they launched a seven-point run to take a 9-2 lead. Kills from Denny and Ambrose extended App State’s lead to 12-4. With App State leading 23-15, the Ragin’ Cajuns scored four straight points to close the deficit, but it wasn’t enough as two kills from Winterhoff sealed the second set for App State 25-20.

In the third and final set, the Black and Golds went 5-1 after kills from Denny, Missroon (two) and Dombrowski. After a three-point run with back-to-back kills from Denny, App State took an 8-4 lead. A kill from Junior Madison Baldridge, block from the duo Winterhoff and Baldridge and ace from McBean put App State up 12-7. The Ragin’ Cajuns hit back with a 7-0 run to take a 14-12 lead. The Mountaineers went out at 21 after kills from Denny and Baldridge and an error from Ragin’ Cajun. A kill from Ambrose and an ace from Bickley gave App State a 24-23 advantage. Louisiana responded with a kill of her own to end things 24-24. App State got set and match point after a block from Missroon and Dombrowski.
