Wichita State Hosts Southern Friday Night

Wichita State ended its seven-game winning streak Sunday at undefeated Kansas, 72-52. The seven straight wins were the most since 2015, when the Shockers won 12 straight. Wichita State posted a season-low in points (52) and field goal percentage (32.4 percent) but also missed 9 of 12 attempts from beyond the arc and committed 19 turnovers. Kansas led by just eight at halftime, but increased that lead to as many as 26 in the second half. Curtessia Dean recorded her second straight game in double digits with 12 points. Jane Asinde grabbed nine rebounds and blocked two shots but finished with just three points.

Led by fifth-year head coach Carlos Funchess, Southern goes 3-6 this season into Friday’s matchup. The Jaguars have already faced five Power 5 teams, including ranked teams: Iowa, Iowa State and Oregon. Eight players average more than 4.0 points per game and zero points in double digits. Amani Mcwain has a team-best 9.8 points per game. As a team, Southern averages just 53.7 points at 35.9 percent shooting. The Jaguars shoot almost better from the three-point range with 35.0 percent. Where they excel on the defensive end is forcing turnovers. Southern steals an average of 10.9 and outcall their opponents on average nearly 17 times per contest.

Wichita State and Southern will face off Friday night for the third time in the past four years. The Shockers have a 2-0 lead in the all-time series, but both games were decided by a 10-point aggregate.

Wichita State held off a scrappy Southern squad 57-53 on December 4, 2020 at Charles Koch Arena. Wichita State was passed by seven in the contest, but only held Southern on 5 of 25 from across the arc and 31 percent overall. Seraphine Bastin and DJ McCarty both ended the defensive battle with a team high of 11 points Asia strong added 10.

Wichita State Senior Jane Asinde was unstoppable for the Shockers. The Ugandan native has had double-doubles in four of the eight games she has participated in, including two consecutive 20-point double-doubles at the LMU Thanksgiving Classic. Asinde opened the LMU Thanksgiving Classic with a career-high 19 rebounds before closing with 20 points against Montana and followed that with a career-high 22 points and 15 rebounds against Loyola Marymount. She has double-digit rebounds in five of eight games.

Wichita State boasts a top-70 defense in its first 10 games of the season. They’ve held all but two opponents to less than 38 percent shot, and only two teams have shot more than 30 percent from three-point range. Wichita State’s field goal defense keeps teams at just 36.5 percent, good for 67th place nationally. Opponents only connect on 27.8 percent of their long-range attempts.

Wichita State continues to be one of the top rebound teams in the country this season. After 10 games, the state of Wichita ranks 30th nationally for rebound margin, 36th for defensive rebounds per game, and 37th for total rebounds per game. The Shockers have passed eight of their ten opponents.

The state of Wichita has a habit of falling behind lately. The Shockers were down by double figures in three straight games, ending up winning all: 17, North Texas (Nov. 19); 11, Montana (November 25); 13, LMU (26 Nov). In those three games, Wichita State outplayed their opponents 125-74 in the second half.


Trajata Colbert has improved dramatically at the free-throw line over the past two years. The Georgia native started her career 42.1 percent as a freshman, 61.1 percent as a sophomore and 50.9 percent as a COVID sophomore. She posted a career-high 76.0 percent in 2021-22 and is 31-36 (86.1 percent) in eight games so far in 2022-23. Colbert ranks second in America’s free throw percentage.

Wichita State went into overtime in two of its first five games of the season. The Shockers fell into overtime on November 12 in Omaha but rallied an overtime win over Montana on November 25. Wichita State is down 4-4 in overtime games Keitha Adams. Wichita State is 21-24 all-time in overtime games.

Wichita State’s 8-1 record in the season opener was the best start in the program’s history. The Shockers made it there after a seven-game winning streak. The seven-game winning streak was the longest since 2015, when Wichita State went on to 12 straight wins.

After 10 games, Wichita State ranks in the top 70 nationally in the following categories: #30 in rebound margin (9.5), #36 in defensive rebounds per game (29.1), #37 in rebounds per game (42.8), No. 67th field goal defense percentage (36.5), and 67th fouls per game (15.1). Jane Asinde ranks 9th nationally in rebounds per game, 10th in defensive rebounds per game, 33rd in double-doubles, and 48th in total rebounds.

junior guard DJ McCarty was a pest on defense for opposing attacks in 10 games. McCarty has recorded at least one steal in all 10 games and multiple in seven of the 10 games. Her 23 steals are the most on the team and she ranks fourth in the American Athletic Conference and 72nd nationally. Her 2.30 steals per game also ranks the American fourth.
