Salukis Unable to Slow Down Southern Indiana on the Road

Evansville, Ind. — Southern Illinois Basketball played its third game in seven days Sunday afternoon in Evansville, falling 71-53 to Southern Indiana at the Screaming Eagles Arena.

Markus Domask (16), Lance Jones (13) and Xavier Johnson (10) each scored in double figures, but it wasn’t enough as USI took advantage of the Salukis’ poor shooting, who finished the game with an average of 32.8 (19-58) and just 17.2 percent ( 5 of 29) behind the arch.

Southern Indiana used a 22-8 run to open the second half and extend the lead to 16 points. During the eight-minute stretch, USI shot 9-for-13, including a pair of 3-pointers while forcing three Saluki turnovers.

With 4:54 minutes remaining, Domask drew the Salukis 54-47 to seven points, but USI finished the game with 17 of the next 23 points to secure the win.

In a back-and-forth first half, Southern Indiana went into the dressing room at 28-26 after Tyler Henry hit a 3-pointer with just four seconds left at halftime. The first 20 minutes featured 10 lead changes and six draws, with neither team leading by more than four points.

Jones led by eight while Domask had six points for the Salukis in the first half, who shot just 34.6 percent from the field, including 4-for-7 from the charity streak.

The Eagles also capitalized on 15 SIU turnovers and converted the Saluki miscues into 15 points. USI won the fight on rebounds 37-29.

Jelani Simmons had a team-high 18 points for USI with five rebounds and three assists.

Southern returns to the Banterra Center for its last home competition before the Thanksgiving holiday when the Salukis host Tennessee State at 7 p.m. Thursday. The game is part of the SoCal Challenge.
