How it happened

An ace of service gave Indiana the opening advantage and the Hoosiers went 3-1 with the first points of the game. The teams traded points until a block from Zoe Weatherington allowed Penn State to tie the score at eight. Yet every time Penn State equalized, Indiana extended their back-and-forth lead.

After extending their lead to four points, the Hoosiers forced Penn State’s first timeout as Katie Schumacher-Cawley’s team trailed 10-14. After the time-out, the Nittany Lions gained some momentum and rallied to level the score at 18-18.

Finally, Penn State took a 21-20 lead with a block. A rating in Penn State’s favor gave the Nittany Lions a 24-22 advantage, and an Indiana offensive error ended the first set 25-22.

The second set started out pretty similar to the first, with both teams trading points and remaining competitive. A strange series of service errors by both teams led to the 9:9. The Nittany Lions fought for the lead for the next few serves until they capitalized on back-to-back kills from Williams to extend their lead to 17-14. Williams’ momentum forced the Hoosier to call a time-out.

Indiana tried to catch up, but his defense was no match for Williams’ kills. The teams continued to trade points, but another kill brought the Nittany Lions up to 23-21. The Hoosiers refused to give up and tied the set at 23, but Penn State finished the second set 25-23.

Penn State finally found footing in the third set and quickly took a 6-1 lead. Kills and service aces from various Nittany Lions let them hold a dominant 10-4 lead.

A handful of Indiana kills attempted to recoup lost points, reducing Penn State’s lead to just three points, 16-13. A 4-0 goal run for the Nittany Lions, peppered with Holland kills and a block, extended the lead back to 20:14. Indiana responded with a 3-0 goal run of their own, but it wasn’t nearly enough to regain the lead.

The Hoosiers rallied to nearly level the score, forcing a timeout from Penn State as the Nittany Lions held on to the 21-20 lead. Coming out of the break, Indiana tied things up at 21. Two consecutive scoring reviews both ruled in Penn State’s favor and gave the Nittany Lions the advantage to win the third set and the match 25-22.

Snack:

  • Indiana absolutely rivaled Penn State in this match. By the third set, Indiana held the lead for most of the game. Every team needs a challenge now and then, and the Hoosiers provided one.
  • Four Nittany Lions had at least eight kills throughout the game. It was a team effort all round and Penn State came together to do what it does best. After all, it’s always the Penn State Volleyball Show.
