Hamilton, Kaelin have career nights in four-set loss Friday

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. Kaitlyn Hamilton posted the first double-double of her collegiate career on Friday, but the Belmont visit outpaced Indiana State in four sets (19-25, 25-23, 25-18, 25-23) at ISU Arena.

Hamilton tied her career-high 17 kills while adding 11 digs in the process Emma Kalin also posted a double-double with 44 kills and 11 digs. storm Suhr and Mallory Keller added 13 kills apiece for the Sycamores who hit .235 for the match.

Indiana State got off to a hot start from an offensive standpoint, hitting .538 in the opening set with just two attacking errors. Back-to-back kills from Keller gave Indiana State a 7-6 lead early in the set that they never gave up. Keller and Hamilton led the Trees early on with 10 kills combined in the first set, with Keller notching the final kill in a 25-19 win in the opening set.

The second set was a back and forth as neither team led by more than two points at any point. Consecutive errors gave Indiana State an 11-9 lead in the set, but the Sycamores couldn’t close the gap. Belmont rallied to take a late lead and came off despite a kill from Hamilton and an ace Melina Tedrow, stopped to win the set 25-23. Hamilton and Suhre combined for 11 kills in the second.

Neither team gained momentum in the third set until an ace of serve from Belmont gave the Bruins a 10-7 lead. Indiana State rallied with kills from Keller, Jamie Brown and Taylor Shelton until the set at 12-all but never made it to the front. Back-to-back kills from Keller late in the set made it 20-18, but Belmont replied with the next five points to take the third 25-18.

Indiana State took a 6-1 lead in the fourth, utilizing two block assists from Keller and Suhre to take the lead. The Sycamores maintained their lead for most of the set, taking a 19-16 lead after a kill from Hamilton and an error from Belmont. A late four-point run for the Bruins proved the difference, though Hamilton had three kills in the last nine points as Belmont held on to take the set 25-23.

In the numbers

  • Indiana State had a better batting average than their opponent for the first time since they hit a .263 at Murray State on Sept. 30.
  • Indiana State had more digs than Belmont (67-66), with four different Sycamores recording double-digit digs as of Friday (Melina Tedrow 19, Kaitlyn Hamilton 11, Emma Kalin 11, Cadence Gilley 10).
  • Indiana State’s .538 opening set batting average was its best single set batting average this season.

  • The 56 kills recorded by Indiana State on Friday were the most since the team notched 67 in a win over Missouri State on Oct. 7.
  • Kaitlyn Hamilton and Emma Kalin became the first Sycamore teammate to hit a double-double in the same game since Karina Gall and Taylor Shelton accomplished the feat on October 7 against the state of Missouri.
  • Emma Kaelins 44 assists was a career high.


Indiana State plays its final home game of the season Saturday at 5 p.m. against Murray State. The Sycamores recognize their senior class Melina TedrowTaylor Shelton and Kylie Newby before the game.
