Deer harvest up from last year during Illinois’ firearm season
Nothing beats good hunting weather to increase deer harvests, and that certainly appears to have helped Illinois deer hunters harvest more deer during gun season this year (76,854} versus last year’s 970,411).
The second part of the season saw good hunting weather apart from the strong winds on one day and the harvest of 24,500 was well above the 21,477 in the second part of last year.

The preliminary harvest for the 2022 Illinois firearms deer season is 76,854
SPRINGFIELD – Hunters in Illinois provisionally took a total of 76,854 deer during the seven-day 2022 Illinois Firearm Deer Season that ended Dec. 4, according to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR).
In comparison, hunters took a total of 70,411 deer during the 2021 gun season.
The preliminary harvest for the second segment of the 2022 firearms season, December 1-4, was 24,500 compared to 21,477 during the second season in 2021. The preliminary harvest for the first segment of this year’s firearms season, November 18-20 was 52,354 deer .
Remaining hunting opportunities for the 2022-23 Illinois deer season include:
Late winter antlerless deer season and Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) deer season, in select counties only, December 29, 2022 through January 1, 2023 and January 13 through January 15, 2023
The archery season runs until January 15, 2023.
