Eagles Host Old Foe Thunderbirds Monday Night

East Washington women’s basketball will be played Monday night (Nov. 14) at Reese Court. Eastern hosts former Big Sky member Southern Utah at 6 p.m. Pacific Time.

Eastern Washington added another win last week with an 83-74 win over Boise State in Boise, Idaho. The win over Boise State was the first for east Washington since December 20, 2013 in Cheney. It is also the program’s first victory over a Mountain West school since defeating the Air Force on November 14, 2017 in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Eastern beat the Broncos 21-12 in the first quarter. The Broncos would cut the lead to 36-34 at halftime and tie the game at 58 after three quarters. The Eagles saved their best shooting through the fourth quarter, going off the floor 8 of 16 (50%). Eastern retired from Boise St. late in the game when they converted his free throw opportunities.

Jaydia Martin scored 17 points, with Aliyah Alexander add 14 Jamie Loera and Jacinta Buckley gave the Eagles four players in double figures after scoring 11 points each. Jaleesa Lawrence also added nine points for Eastern. Using aggressive defense, the Eagles forced 20 bronco turnovers and scored 29 points from those opportunities.

A look at the eagles
Eastern Washington started the season strong with a 2-0 record and an average win percentage of 24 points. The Eagles have averaged plus 14 turnovers this season, lost an average of nine and forced 23 from opponents. The team averages 15.5 steals per game. Martin leads the team with seven steals while Alexander and Loera have five each.

Eastern has three players averaging double digits, led by Martin, who has 17 points in each of the team’s first two games. Alexander has an average of 14.5 points per game while Loera adds 10.5 points per game.

As a team, the Eagles shoot 45.2 percent from three-point range. Martin and Alexander both shoot 55.6 percent from three, while Loera lights up with 66.7 percent.

In addition to offensive versatility, Buckley averages 9.5 points per game and 5.5 rebounds per game. Buckley is tied for the team lead with Loera in rebounds per game.

Andie Zylak retains her place as a key figure for Eastern, leading the team with nine assists and averaging 5.5 points per game while ranking third with seven rebounds.

Eastern was ranked sixth in Big Sky’s pre-2022-23 season coach poll. Eastern was ranked eighth in the preseason media poll. The team finished ninth in the Big Sky rankings last season.

Exploring the Thunderbirds
Southern Utah has a 2-1 record early in the season. The Thunderbirds lost their last game in a road contest to Gonzaga on Saturday, 38-91. In the team’s first game of the season, Southern Utah defeated New Mexico 76-68 at home. The team’s second win was a 102-60 win over Benedictine University in Mesa.

Lizzy Williams, a redshirt junior center, led the T-Birds against Gonzaga, scoring 14 points and rebounding 10. Junior guard Daylani Ballena also scored 13 points in the game.

Eastern Washington has a 12-12 record against Southern Utah in program history and goes 7-6 against the T-Birds at Reese Court. Southern Utah has won the last four games of the series, including a 55-38 win at Reese Court last February. The T-Birds left the Big Sky Conference last season and are now affiliated with the Western Athletic Conference.
