Sen. Richard Blumenthal hails Dems’ upset Senate wins as ‘historic opportunity’

Senator Richard Blumenthal on Sunday hailed the Democrats’ disgruntled Senate victory as a “historic opportunity” to pursue the party’s long-sought goals, including cutting health care costs and expanding voting rights.

“Control of the Senate presents a truly historic opportunity to continue our work to meet the needs of Americans in everyday life,” Blumental said in an interview with Hearst Connecticut Media. “There is so much to do and I think we are all really excited to have the opportunity to continue this work.”

Democrats were forecast to hold on to their slim majority Saturday after the Associated Press called the Nevada race for Democratic incumbent Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto, giving the party at least 50 seats in the chamber. Control of the house is still unclear.

With inflation high and President Joe Biden struggling with low approval ratings, many political observers had expected a strong performance on election night from Republicans running in races across the country
