Jazz Pianist Christian Sands in Concert at The Klein with GCTYO, Nov. 20

BRIDGEPORT, CT – The six-time Grammy-nominated jazz tour de force and New Haven-born son Christian Sands and his trio will premiere a new symphonic jazz composition by local composer Rex Cadwallader, accompanied by Greater Connecticut Youth Orchestras conducted by Christopher Hisey

Six-time Grammy nominee Christian Sands is a jazz force. His piano playing has been hailed as “a fresh look at the entire language of jazz” and his music has been described as “gorgeous”. Sands has been praised as a “uniquely gifted musical soul”.

Don’t miss this special opportunity to have the Christian Sands Trio with the main orchestra of the Greater Connecticut Youth Orchestra (GCTYO) on stage on November 20th at The Klein in Bridgeport for the world premiere of Rex Cadwallader’s symphonic jazz composition “There Will Be Tanzen.” The The piece was written specifically for Sands at the piano “to capture the rhythmic, melodic and harmonic essence of 21st century jazz” The opportunity to enrich these elements with the added richness and virtuosity of the GCTYO Orchestra is an exciting prospect , which offers performers and audiences alike a glimpse into the creative genius of Christian Sands.Because Sands is such a gifted improviser, the track will also allow for “moments of pure, unscripted, momentary musical artistry”.Sands is a native son of New Haven , Connecticut.

“There Will Be Dancing” travels through a variety of musical styles. Jazz is not just one style, but a mixture of music from many different cultures. The track touches on just a few of these: listeners hear blues, latin, fusion, contemporary jazz that’s yet to be named, a beautiful ballad and sections throughout that allow Sands and his trio to put their unique stamp on the musical envelope.

The GCTYO’s 80-piece main orchestra is conducted by Christopher Hisey. Student musicians perform at a level equivalent to some professional orchestras. In addition to There Will Be Dancing, the Principal Orchestra will perform Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony, American composer Jack Lawrence’s Beyond the Sea and Leonard Bernstein’s Overture to Candide. The GCTYO Big Band Jazz Orchestra will open the program.

The concert will take place on Sunday, November 20 at 6:30 p.m. at The Klein Memorial Auditorium, 910 Fairfield Avenue, Bridgeport, Connecticut. Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 on the day.
