AZ Big Media State Forty Eight opens in Gilbert Heritage District

Local apparel brand State Forty Eight opened its third retail location in downtown Gilbert at 325 N. Ash Street on Saturday, November 12. The new 1,456 square foot store is located in The Collab, a new mixed-use development with other Arizona-based businesses such as Scoopwells, Rumble Boxing and Candle Chemistry. The company currently operates from its headquarters in Chandler, which has an adjacent retail store, and another location at The Churchill in downtown Phoenix.

“Our team has put a lot of time and energy into creating a space that our customers will love,” says CEO and co-founder Mike Spangenberg. “Our goal is to provide residents of Gilbert and all residents of the nearby East Valley communities with greater access to gear and supplies representative of all things love for Arizona.”

Spangenberg, along with its co-founder and creative director, Nicholas Polando, have set out to become a one-stop apparel shop in Arizona. Over the years, State Forty Eight has become known for its Arizona-inspired clothing, but has increasingly been recognized as the go-to company for local businesses and organizations to market themselves.

The company’s collaborative component has been one of State Forty Eight’s biggest revenue generators, giving the companies a local option for co-branded t-shirts, stickers or hats that show their Arizona pride. Additionally, this model allows State State Forty Eight to give back, with $1 from each t-shirt benefiting the collaboration of the State Forty Eight Foundation and their mission to support and empower Arizona entrepreneurs and their nonprofit organizations.

In 2021, collaborations with State Forty Eight brought in combined sales of over $1.6 million. As of October 2022, they are on track to surpass those numbers, having worked with more than 500 organizations and generating $1.4 million in revenue.

“We are proud to work with a diverse group of organizations in Arizona,” says Spangenberg. “One of the most rewarding parts of our business is building relationships with our partners and helping them add value to their work.”

State Forty Eight Gilbert is the company’s largest location and features an elevated look with concrete floors, sleek wood and matte black fixtures, with the iconic State Forty Eight logo prominently positioned above the register. Customers can expect a range of new items from t-shirts, hats and hoodies to custom drinkware and a variety of Arizona sports-inspired jerseys. The company will quietly open this month, but plans to hold a grand opening celebration later this year. Visit for hours of operation
